5 Abnormal flame-proving signal

Critical severity ICP (F/G)9MAE Modulating Furnace

What the control is telling you

Flame is sensed while the gas valve is off. Inducer runs until the fault clears.

Applies to: ICP F9MAE / G9MAE modulating variable-speed condensing gas furnaces (060, 080, 100, 120 kBtu/h)

Likely causes

  • Gas valve stuck open or leaking through

Test and repair steps

  1. Warning: Gas may be flowing with the valve de-energized - shut off the manual gas valve and power if flame is present.
  2. Look through the sight glass for flame with no heat call.
  3. Check the gas valve for leak-through; replace the valve if it is stuck open or leaking.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
